Every journey has a beginning, and for Project 33, that beginning was Beth.
Beth was nominated by one of her closest friends after becoming critically ill with meningitis affecting her brain. She had been admitted to hospital on Christmas Eve, and because of an underlying health condition, her illness became life-threatening.
As a mum of three, Beth had spent months fighting for her health. During that time, everyday life understandably became overwhelming. Looking after herself and her children had to come first, and gradually the house became another burden she simply didn't have the strength to face.
When we heard Beth's story, we knew we had to help.
Back then, Project 33 wasn't the organisation it is today. There wasn't a huge team of trades or dozens of volunteers waiting in the wings. In fact, we had no idea whether anyone would even want to get involved.
We put a simple post on Facebook asking if anybody would be willing to help.

The very first person to answer was Zak from GR8 Flooring. He didn't just offer his time, he offered to supply and fit brand-new flooring completely free of charge. We were completely overwhelmed by the generosity shown. Flooring is a significant expense, and we couldn't believe someone was willing to donate both the materials and the labour for a family they'd never even met.
Then a professional decorator offered to help.
Soon after, local businesses started believing in the vision too. Inspired Living generously donated a beautiful new sofa for Beth and her family, while Solo Furniture kindly gifted a stunning marble dining table and chairs, along with several other beautiful pieces of furniture to help make the house feel like a home again.
One by one, more volunteers, tradespeople and businesses stepped forward. Looking back now, that simple Facebook post became the foundation of everything Project 33 has grown into today.
The team who showed up. Strangers when they arrived, family by the time they left.
While Beth remained in hospital, our small team transformed the two areas that would make the biggest difference to family life, the living room and the children's bedrooms. We also organised the entire house, creating a calmer, more functional home ready for Beth's return.
It wasn't the full-house transformations that Project 33 has become known for today, but it was everything we could give at the time, and every person involved poured their heart into making a difference.

Around ten days after the transformation was complete, Beth was finally discharged from hospital.
Instead of returning to the home she'd left behind, she walked through the door to a brighter, warmer and more organised home, lovingly prepared by people who simply wanted to make life a little easier for her and her children.
That day changed more than Beth's home.
It changed us.
It proved that when ordinary people come together with kindness, extraordinary things can happen.
The Christmas the boys never forgot
Months later, Beth returned, not as someone receiving help, but as a volunteer on our third Project 33 transformation. While chatting that day, she shared a story that has stayed with us ever since.
Because she'd been rushed into hospital on Christmas Eve, life had been turned upside down. Christmas never really happened as planned, and many of the children's presents had remained unopened, still stacked away in boxes while the family's focus was simply on getting Mum home.
As part of organising the house, our volunteers unpacked everything and sorted the presents and toys into the children's bedrooms. When the boys came home, they genuinely believed Project 33 had bought them all those presents. They had completely forgotten they were actually their own Christmas gifts.
Beth still laughs about it today. She says whenever the boys refuse to tidy their bedrooms, she jokingly tells them:
"If you don't tidy up, I'm going to get that lady to come back and take your toys away."
Behind the humour is a heartbreaking reminder of what that family had endured. Serious illness had stolen their Christmas, but together, our community helped give a little piece of it back.
Today, Beth is a much-loved member of the Project 33 family, volunteering alongside us to help other families facing difficult times.
There could be no more fitting ending to our very first project.
Because Project 33 has never simply been about transforming homes.
It's about restoring hope, rebuilding lives, and proving that one act of kindness can inspire another, until an entire community comes together to change lives.
